Welcome to a new change on our site. We have removed the letters facility as we have discovered that people in the medical imaging community have little that they want to say to the professional magazines or sites such as this, but why?
What we do find is that there is a general apathy in the professions at the moment. Whether this is as a result of the ubiquitous 'credit crunch' who knows. Is it because more and more decisions seem to be taken centrally instead of being devolved to those delivering the service? Our lead story on the equipment framework would seem to suggest that the big get bigger and those further down the chain are left feeling frustrated.
Did you know that only 2000 people visited UKRC in Birmingham this year?
Only 2000, with a profession which must have over 40,000 people employed in it, does suggest that the annual meeting as we know it has had its day. But surely a profession as dynamic as medical imaging should be able to sustain a thriving academic meeting, even if the trade exhibition needs to be scaled down, which clearly it is being.

Ask the average citizen of Southend, Salisbury or Shrewsbury as an example, if they would like their NHS scan undertaking by the commercial arm of the Dubai Government and they might think you mad. But now that Alliance Medical and with it as a result of acquisition, Lodestone is owned by Dubai Capital, it shows that diagnostics is becoming the 'big boys' game as more acquisitions and mergers take place. Can all these private providers survive as quite clearly the market for them is not as healthy as it was a year or so ago? The NHS has upped its game and dramatically reduced waiting lists. Another problem for the private providers is the chronic shortage of staff, particularly radiographers and sonographers. With salaries now more than matching the private sector 68,000 - 83,000 pounds is current on offer for a manager for radiology at The Royal Free), the incentive to move to these providers is by no means as attractive as it was.
In hard times they may find it even more difficult to recruit and have to look overseas to a greater extent than they do now.

Why do some companies feature more heavily than others in VisionXR? I was asked this last week by a radiologist who cynically asked if it was dependant on who paid most for advertising. Absolutely not! The plain facts are that some companies have a more effective PR machine than others. In fact I sometimes wonder, if some (and large ones at that), have PR at all.
